UFC Jacksonville: Miguel Baeza KOs Matt Brown, stays unbeaten

After Miguel Baeza and Matt Brown nearly knocked one another out in the first round, it was Baeza who got the final blow and stayed undefeated at UFC Jacksonville

Miguel Baeza defeated Matt Brown via KO, Round 2 – 0:18 at UFC Jacksonville on Saturday, May 16, 2020, live from the Vystar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, FL.

With the win, Miguel Baeza, a jiu-jitsu black belt, improves to 9-0 (2-0 in the UFC) and gets his seventh knockout with the win over the longtime UFC veteran.

“You come in here with a gameplan. I saw his face and said, ‘Let’s fight,'” Baeza said. “He’s a legend.”

Round 1

The two meet in the center of the Octagon. Brown works the left jab. Baeza throws a left jab. Low kick by Baeza as Brown throws a right. Left jab by Brown and Baeza nearly lands a right on the chin. High kick by Baeza. Low kick by Baeza. Low kick by Baeza and Brown answers with a one-two. Low kick by Baeza. Low kick by Baeza. One-two by Brown. One-two by Baeza. Another Baeza low kick. Brown fires a small flurry. Low kick by Baeza. Major combination by Brown knocks Baeza’s mouthpiece out and continues to tag him against the cage. Brown clinches up and lands a knee and elbows. Brown breaks off briefly before continuing to pound away. Baeza survives and gets his mouthpiece back! That was a close call for Baeza! Left jab missed by Baeza. Baeza connects with a couple of rights and a couple of low kicks. Major one-two by Brown and he goes in to attack again, but Baeza cracks him and Brown goes down! Baeza follows Brown to the ground! And now we have a grappling battle. A couple of shots from Baeza. Brown stands up but can’t get his arm around Baeza’s neck. One-two by Brown again. Spinning kick by Brown. Left by Baeza. Brown misses a left. Brown lands a left. Baeza fires off a combination before the horn. Both men nearly got a finish in that first five minutes!

Baeza, undefeated heading into this bout, earned a UFC contract through the third season of Dana White’s Contender Series, scoring a decision win over Victor Reyna. He made his official Octagon debut at UFC Tampa in October, scoring a second-round finish of Hector Aldana.

A member of the UFC since competing on season seven of The Ultimate Fighter, Brown traded wins and losses before going on a seven-fight winning streak until he lost a welterweight title eliminator to Robbie Lawler. This marked the start of a low period for Brown, as he lost five of his next six. Brown defeated Diego Sanchez in November 2017 in what was expected to be his retirement bout — but he returned at UFC 245 in December with a win over Ben Saunders.
