NFL history is filled with some of the greatest teams of all time, but these five teams could have been historic too with a Super Bowl title.

The NFL celebrated its 100th season in 2019 with a ton of countdowns, including one of the 100 best teams in football history. The list was littered with Super Bowl champions but also included a few non-title winners as well.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at the five greatest NFL teams to never win a Super Bowl. We’ll start our countdown with a trip back to Super Bowl IV in 1969.

5. 1969 Minnesota Vikings

The Baltimore Colts draw all the hype for losing to an AFL squad in Super Bowl III, but that core at least won a title a few years later. That wasn’t the case for the 1969 Minnesota Vikings, a dominant squad that came up short in the big game.

Those Vikings won the last NFL championship prior to the merger, blowing out the Cleveland Browns by 20 points to reach the Super Bowl. Minnesota led the NFL in both scoring (27.1 points per game) and scoring defense (9.5 points allowed per game), which should have led to an easy win over the Kansas City Chiefs.

The game was a laugher, but it was at the Vikings’ expense as the Chiefs rolled to a 23-7 rout. Minnesota did make three more Super Bowls over the next decade, losing them all, but their first NFL championship squad would have been one of the greatest teams ever with a Lombardi Trophy on their resume.
