Chicago Cubs starter Jon Lester is fired up about about the upcoming shortened baseball season.

After what seemed like an eternity of discussions and negotiations, we will finally have real baseball in a couple of weeks. It’s going to look a bit different, as Major League Baseball compacted the 2020 season into just 60 games and teams will be playing regionally close games. But that doesn’t stop Chicago Cubs starter Jon Lester from getting amped up over the season.

Lester, who was part of the historic 2016 Cubs team that won the World Series, spoke with reporters on Saturday. And he was not shy about letting his feelings be known that his goal this year is simple — win it all again. He was quoted as saying, “No, a trophy’s a trophy. I don’t care if it’s 60 games.”

It won’t be an easy path for the Cubs, who will only be playing teams from the NL Central and AL Central this year. This is being done to cut down on a lot of travel for teams amid the coronavirus pandemic and to help protect the players and team staff.

So while they’ll get their normal dose of the Cardinals, Pirates, and Reds, now they get the American League counterparts in the Central. This will include a healthy diet of games against the cross-town rival White Sox and the Indians, who the Cubs beat in Game 7 of the 2016 World Series.

Lester went on to note that while people will talk about the impact of the shortened 2020 season, the players still have to work hard to get to the championship. “That’s still important to us, and still important to me. I’m still fighting for that and I don’t care if it’s 60 games or 190 games or whatever it is. You still have to play well to get that trophy.”

The Cubs will kick off their quest for another championship on July 24, when they host the Brewers at Wrigley Field. Whether you’re a fan of the Cubs, another team, or just baseball in general, the chance to see live baseball is back and we can’t wait.
