The Philadelphia Eagles officially agreed to terms with their new backup quarterback.

The 2020 NFL Draft was a relatively predictable event, with the exception of a few shocking selections. Perhaps the most surprising pick came in the second round, where the Philadelphia Eagles selected Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts less than a year after the team signed Carson Wentz to a massive contract.

On Monday, the Eagles made it official by signing Hurts to his rookie contract. The deal is for four-years, worth $6.03 million, with a $1.49 million signing bonus and $175,000 in total workout bonuses for his third and fourth years.

Jalen Hurts’ deal doesn’t hurt the Eagles

Even though Eagles fans were up in arms about the team using their 53rd overall pick on a quarterback, the decision made sense. While Wentz is a top-10 quarterback in the NFL, he does have serious durability issues. Just look at his knee injury in 2017, back ailment in 2018 and his concussion suffered in this past season’s NFC Wild Card Game. Having a contingency plan never hurts (pun intended).

After transferring from Alabama to Oklahoma, Hurts broke out under the tutelage of head coach and quarterback whisperer Lincoln Riley. Through 14 games last season, Hurts completed 69.7 percent of his passes for 3,851 yards, 32 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Hurts was a Heisman finalist, but finished in second place behind LSU star signal caller Joe Burrow.

Entering 2020, the full expectation is that the Eagles will roll with Wentz under center. Even so, rumors began circulating that head coach Doug Pederson could use Hurts in play packages like the New Orleans Saints do with Taysom Hill.

Either way, the Eagles made a wise investment for relatively cheap.
