1. QB Philip Rivers bounces back in 2020

Quarterback Philip Rivers became the Chargers’ fulltime starter in Week 1 of ‘06 and didn’t miss a game or start for 14 consecutive seasons. He brings a 224-game regular-season streak into 2020 as he now takes over for Frank Reich’s club. And that passion seen often on the field is alive and well.

“I think in the purest form, there’s still that love of the game, and I love to compete,” said the 16-year pro to SI.com’s Albert Breer earlier this month. “And this new opportunity at this point of my career, that’s it in its simplest form.”

Being back with Frank Reich as well as a few other former Chargers’ assistants is a big plus as well. “The scheme, is very, very, very similar, I’d say 80 percent, at least,” explained Rivers to Breer. “But the terminology has been tweaked, which, in some ways, is really good…

“That was good for me, just because it was similar concepts, I was relearning them with a new terminology, and then hammering home all the reads and how we did it. So being in a different environment, but with the same offense, it’s a new challenge. It’s reinvigorating.”

But Rivers has to perform better than a year ago. Despite a 66.0 completion percentage and 4,615 yards through the air, there were just as many turnovers (23) as touchdown passes. And that won’t get the Colts very far in 2020.
