Why would the Patriots have a QB platoon when they have Cam Newton?

The Patriots don’t need to make things too complicated at quarterback.

Bill Belichick is continuing to keep his plans at quarterback a mystery. The New England Patriots have Cam Newton at their disposal, yet Belichick is insisting Brian Hoyer and Jarrett Stidham are still in the mix to start.

The head coach went a step further by bringing up the idea of a platoon at quarterback. Once again, he already has Newton.

Patriots do not need to consider a platoon with Cam Newton and Jarrett Stidham

Belichick mentioned the idea with the reasoning of doing whatever it takes to win. ESPN’s Mike Reiss shared the fascinating quotes from Belichick when asked if it’ll benefit the Patriots by playing two quarterbacks with two different sets of skills.

“It might,” Belichick said. “I always say I’ll do what I think is best for the team, what gives us the best chance to win. Whatever that is, I would definitely consider it — run unbalanced line, double unbalanced line, 23 personnel. Whatever it is, if it helps us win, I would consider anything.”

This is another legendary non-answer from Belichick. However, he did not shoot down the idea of using a platoon.

Such a system would make no sense with Newton at his disposal. The quarterback does have the ability to run the ball but is also the most prolific passer on the team. Using such a system may also telegraph plays if Stidham or Hoyer never run the ball.

Newton has never had a full season in which he threw for under 3,100 yards and still averages 600 rushing yards per season. He is a platoon in himself and giving the offense more than one quarterback to work with would only complicate things in a year without a preseason.

Next. Cam Newton already winning over Bill Belichick. dark

The former Carolina Panthers star has shown he is much more than just a runner. He should get a chance to take down this narrative once again with his new team. That would benefit both him and the entire organization.
