The White Sox call of Lucas Giolito’s no-hitter was perfect.

The Chicago White Sox are off to an amazing 18-12 start and capped off the first half of their season with a Lucas Giolito no-hitter Tuesday night.

The feat was accomplished in 101 pitches against the sinking Pittsburgh Pirates and the celebration was on following the final out. The lack of crowd noise made this no-hitter feel different, but White Sox announced Jason Benetti made up for it with a great call.

White Sox fans get the perfect balance

Benetti did the perfect thing, which is to allow the moment to breathe. He did not talk over the celebration and let fans at home take it in as it happened. So basically the opposite of what Chris Webber does on NBA broadcasts.

Being a sports broadcaster involves preparing for any outcome on a daily basis. Benetti likely didn’t go to work expecting to call a no-hitter, but he has clearly practiced and understood the moment.

Benetti had big shoes to fill taking over for Hawk Harrelson and appears to be doing great. Fans have likely heard his voice on ESPN broadcasts as well. The man is well-traveled and is showing off his chops in big moments.

Calling a no-hitter in an empty stadium had to be a bit bizarre and it’s possible some on the field heard his screams from the press box. It all adds to the excitement as the White Sox kept themselves right in the thick of the American League Central race at the midway point of the season.

There were a few close calls throughout the game and the team rallied around Giolito to ensure the no-hitter. That provided plenty of excitement in the final call as the White Sox are in the midst of what could end up being a special season.
