Injuries have been a big issue for Carson Wentz during his NFL career. That’s why the Eagles should be concerned about his latest ailment.

When healthy, Carson Wentz has the ability to be one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL. The challenge for the Philadelphia Eagles‘ starter has been staying on the field during his four seasons of professional football.

That’s why the news that Wentz is being held out of practice will set off alarm bells for Eagles fans. The team isn’t revealing the specific nature of his latest injury. They simply refer to it as a “soft tissue injury.

No exact timetable is being given for the signal-callers return but he is being listed as day-to-day.

Carson Wentz is injured yet again

The team has every right to be cautious with Wentz at this point in the preseason due to his lengthy injury history. He doesn’t have anything to prove or play for during training camp. He’ll be the team’s unquestioned starter as long as he is reasonably healthy heading into Week 1.

It’s still a concern for a player who has struggled to keep himself on the field at key moments for his team. Last season he managed to play in all 16 regular-season games before a concussion knocked him out of the team’s Wild Card matchup with the Seahawks.

That was an improvement over his availability during the 2017 and 2018 campaigns. He missed a total of eight regular-season games during those two seasons while most notably bowing out of the Eagles’ magical run to a Super Bowl title in 2018.

If Wentz is forced to miss significant time, the Eagles will likely turn to Jalen Hurts to take his place. Nate Sudfeld might have more experience, but Philadelphia’s front office likes Hurts’ ability to make big plays with both his arm and legs. Depending on Hurts as a rookie wouldn’t be ideal for the Eagles, but it could be a way for them to stay afloat if Wentz is only forced to miss a handful of games.

It’s too early to panic about Wentz’s health, but it’s certainly a situation to keep a close eye on as training camp progresses. The Eagles can’t afford to start the 2020 regular season without Wentz at the controls of their offense.
