Nikki Cross earns another shot at the WWE SmackDown women’s championship at WWE Clash of Champions.

Two major storylines were the focus heading into the September 11 edition of WWE SmackDown. Roman Reigns was to address his cousin, Jey Uso about their upcoming match for the WWE Universal title, while Bayley was to reveal why she destroyed her friendship with Sasha Banks last week. Those to angles continued while other action occurred throughout the show.

AJ Styles versus Jeff Hardy was the first match of the evening. Hardy is the current Intercontinental champion, and he is involved with not only Styles, but former champion Sami Zayn as all three men attempt to claim the title for their own.

This match was a standard edition of Styles versus Hardy. Hardy continued to try to use his high-flying offense, while Style kept him ground throughout much of the affair. Hardy looked like he was getting momentum behind him, until he missed a Whisper in the Wind. Before Styles could get back into the ring, Zayn made an appearance, attacking him and costing Hardy the match.

Cesaro and Shinsuke Nakamura had their eyes on the Street Profits. That lack of focus came back to bite them when they dropped a match to the Lucha House Party on Friday. Nakamura and Cesaro were in firm control of this match. Gran Metalik and Kalisto had moments early but looked like there were headed to another defeat from the SmackDown tag team champions. The Street Profits appeared on the big screen, doing just enough of a distraction for Kalisto to roll up Cesaro for the victory.

Nikki Cross earns a title shot

After Bayley gave her sermon to explain why she attacked Banks, a fatal-four-way match started to determine the next contender to her SmackDown women’s title. Alexa Bliss, Nikki Cross, Lacey Evans and Tamina were in this match to earn a title shot.

Bayley attacked Cross at the start of the match, which limited her from having much offense early. That did not stop Tamina, Evans and Bliss from battling things out amongst themselves. Things turned when the four women ended up outside the ring. Bliss looked like she was helping Cross to her feet, but instead hit her with the Sister Abigail. Then she exited the match, leaving the other women to compete in the match.

Evans took over the match and it looked like she was in position to win, especially after hitting the Double-Jump Moonsault. Cross broke up the pin at the last minute and hit a DDT on Evans. Tamina tried to land her Superkick again but Cross avoided it, rolling her up for the victory and the title shot at Clash of Champions.

John Morrison and Otis competed in a one-on-one match to continue their feud for yet another week. This time it was the Miz that stole the Money in the Bank contract, which infuriated Otis. He would land the Caterpillar and follow up with the Vader Bomb to pick up the win.

The main event of the night was a tag team match. Baron Corbin and Sheamus teamed to face Jey Uso and Roman Reigns.

Corbin and Sheamus focused all their offense on Jey at the start of the match. Jey was out there by himself for the match but his appearance gave just enough room for Jey to get his offense going. Jey did all the work, allowing for Roman to get the tag, land the Spear and pin Sheamus – all without breaking a sweat.
