Baker Mayfield’s 2020 Browns season is already off to a miserable start

Marlon Humphrey is among the best defensive backs in the AFC North, but this isn’t what Mayfield had in mind with his redemption story. Baker is coming off a disappointing sophomore season, and the Browns need him to vastly improve from that performance if they’re to reach their ultimate goal.

Thankfully, they’ve provided him with one of the best supporting casts in football, featuring the likes of Odell Beckham, Jr., Jarvis Landry, Austin Hooper, Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt. Shall I go on? Mayfield’s first drive of 2020 couldn’t have gone any worse.

It’s early, but Browns fans should be wary of Mayfield’s start to 2020

The former No. 1 overall pick provided hope to Browns fans that have seen oh so many quarterbacks come and go, and his attitude and grit matched that of the Dawg Pound. For Cleveland sports fans, however, it was too good to be true, and Baker’s second season at the helm ended in tremendous disappointment, as the Browns failed to make the playoffs.

The Browns are still banking on Mayfield, and they’re right to do so, but if he struggles again this year they’ll have to start thinking about their long-term future. This offseason, Mayfield discussed “blocking out the noise” with the media, keeping himself out of the headlines for as long as humanly possible while he focused on preparing for this make-or-break season.

Thus far, it’s not going as planned.
