After an eventful day of football on Sunday, the NFL Week 1 action continues 24 hours later. The New York Giants host the very first “Monday Night Football” game of the season, against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Ben Roethlisberger will make his return after a season-ending elbow injury suffered last year, while Daniel Jones ushers in a new era of Giants football now that Eli Manning has retired.

What to watch for in Giants-Steelers matchup

The Giants, after an abysmal two-year tenure under Pat Shurmur, have brought in former New England Patriots special teams coordinator Joe Judge to help lead the team out of the NFC East cellar. His hard-nosed and no-nonsense coaching style has caught the attention of the football world, but it is a much-needed change for the Giants, who have lost more games than any other NFL team in the past three years.

New York fans have bought into Jones as their future signal caller. A relatively good rookie year was blemished by his turnover issues, which can be attributed to a lackluster offensive line unit. This time around, general manager Dave Gettleman rebuilt the offensive line, as evidenced by the NFL Draft selection of Andrew Thomas, who will start at left tackle in his pro debut. Plus, Giants fans will get to see how the offense of Jones, Saquon Barkley and Evan Engram will look under new offensive coordinator Jason Garrett.

As for the Steelers, they came up just short of making the playoffs last year. They were carried by their explosive defense consisting of TJ Watt, Bud Dupree and Cameron Heyward, all of whom are expected to have a field day against New York’s revamped offensive line.

The Steelers’ main detriment was at the quarterback position, as Mason Rudolph and Devlin Hodges did the team no favors with their play in relief of Roethlisberger. With “Big Ben” starting under center, the Steelers enter Monday night as playoff contenders. Certainly helps when he has weapons like JuJu Smith Schuster, Diontae Johnson, Chase Claypool and Eric Ebron.
