Chicago Cubs pitcher Tyler Chatwood’s recovery isn’t going as planned

Chatwood might not be able to pitch for the Cubs again this season. After hitting the injured list on Sept. 1, Chatwood was hopeful to make his return in the middle of the month, and therefore be ready for the postseason should the Cubs hold on and win the NL Central. Unfortunately for him, any further time on the injured list could force David Ross’ hand.

Ross said Chatwood’s elbow wasn’t feeling good, and they’re going to be cautious with him moving forward. In a shortened season where the World Series is up for grabs, there’s no reason to force Chatwood back. The unpredictability of the postseason could make it all for naught.

Chatwood would’ve been another piece for the Cubs pitching staff

The Cubs bullpen is all over the place, but Chicago has gotten recent contributions from Craig Kimbrel that should make them feel positive about the back end of their ‘pen heading into the postseason. Ross has every right to be cautious, though.

Adding another arm in Chatwood would’ve been appreciated, especially on his previous timeline. Chatwood started the season as the pitcher the Cubs thought they acquired when they signed him to a three-year, $38 million deal. Sadly, injury issues led to an obvious decline, and his ERA ballooned to 4.70.

Chicago’s rotation isn’t much better off than its bullpen, and Chatwood would’ve served as a hybrid of sorts. Yu Darvish, Kyle Hendricks and Alec Mills can be counted on, while Jon Lester’s been up and down. Chatwood could’ve been a solid fourth or fifth option, or even utilized as long relief had the Cubs chosen that route.
