Raheem Mostert broke an 80-yard touchdown on the game’s first play.

The New York Jets needed to come out and set the tone against the San Francisco 49ers after their Week 1 loss, but Raheem Mostert just sapped all their momentum away. On the first offensive play of the game, Mostert broke off an 80-yard touchdown to give San Francisco a 7-0 lead despite the fact they’re playing without star tight end George Kittle.

Raheem Mostert is proving he is one of the game’s most explosive running backs

Kittle’s injury was supposed to be a major detriment to the running game given how his blocks often spring big outside zone runs, but Mostert slicing through the Jets goes to prove that this 49ers offense can stay humming along when they’re less than 100 percent. Even with a hobbled San Francisco offense, Mostert is showing that Kyle Shanahan can lean on him to break off big plays, even against a team that retained a lot of the key members from a defense that ranked near the top of the league in rush defense a year ago.

Mostert, a former Big Ten track champion, reached 23.1 miles per hour on his touchdown run, the fastest ball-carrier speed Next Gen Stats has recorded in the last two seasons. With that sort of juice and bog-play potential in the backfield, it makes life that much easier for Jimmy Garoppolo and a passing game playing without several top receivers.

While the 49ers are rolling in the Meadowlands, the Jets continue to struggle on both sides of the ball. San Francisco is heading into this game with their B-team, and they’re still managing to rip-off big plays early in this game. Adam Gase and Gregg Williams has to be disgusted with their performance in this game.
