The Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver could potentially make his return to the field in the near future.

Back in 2017, the addition of Alshon Jeffery was one of the key reasons why the Philadelphia Eagles won their first Super Bowl in franchise’s history. Since then, Jeffery has been unable to stay on the field for a full season. Just look at last year, when Jeffery missed six games due to a foot injury, leading to him  undergoing Lisfranc surgery earlier this year. Now, Jeffery is nearing his return.

According to reporters in attendance at Eagles practice on Thursday, Jeffery participated in individual drills while wearing a helmet. Additionally, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN says that Jeffery is not expected to play this Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals “unless something unforeseen happens.”

Jeffery returning soon, but the final date has yet to be determined

Last season was a nightmare for Jeffery and the Eagles. Early on in the season, the veteran NFL wideout missed one game due to a calf injury. Then in Week 9, Jeffery picked up a hip injury, which forced him to miss the following two contests. Jeffery was then placed on Philadelphia’s season-ending injured reserve due to the foot ailment.

That year, Jeffery caught 43-of-73 targets from quarterback Carson Wentz for 490 yards and four touchdowns.

Even though Jeffery was a non-participant in Eagles training camp, head coach Doug Pederson put him on the team’s 53-man active roster, meaning that he had faith that the veteran would be able to return early on in the 2020 campaign. The news couldn’t have come at a better time for the Eagles, as they just placed rookie receiver Jalen Reagor on the injured list with a torn UCL in his left thumb, where he’ll return after the team’s bye in Week 9.

With a Jeffery return more likely to happen in Week 4 against the San Francisco 49ers, the Eagles will have to make do with a receiving corps of DeSean Jackson, Greg Ward and J.J. Arcega-Whiteside when facing the Bengals.
