College football DFS quarterback picks September 26:
Top Tier:
Sam Ehlinger has six touchdowns and over 600 yards against Texas Tech over the last two seasons. I know, I was expecting extravagant stat lines like he had against UTEP in the opener. Ehlinger doesn’t make mistakes, so he’s ideal for cash games. He also racks up plenty of yards on the ground, which makes him worth a shot if you have the cash. However, I don’t see his ceiling as high enough for GPP formats.
Malik Cunningham is going to have a solid game against Pitt. Solid enough to use him in cash games, but for GPP formats, my money is on Spencer Rattler. Kansas State’s defense gave up 35 points to an Arkansas State team that used two quarterbacks the whole game. Oklahoma will too, but only because Rattler is resting in the fourth quarter because of a huge lead.
Middle Tier:
LSU returns just three starters out of the 22 that won the National title last year. That’s it. I know that Mississippi State is in transition as well but expecting Myles Brennan to live up to this price will all new receiving corps is too much to ask. I’m going with a more sure thing.
Kyle Trask isn’t going to put up big numbers either, but the thing that often goes unnoticed with him is that he really didn’t make many mistakes last year. Two of his seven interceptions were thrown in a 56-0 drubbing of Vanderbilt. His only other multi interception game was in a thumping of Tennessee. Trask wont win you the slate, but he sure wont lose it for you either.
We saw Oklahoma State play an uninspired game against Tulsa. Jarret Doege looks like a steal at this price. I know that carving up Eastern Kentucky is nothing to get too excited about, but Tulsa only won four games last year. The Cowboys have some issues right now.
If D’Wan Mathis draws the start for Georgia against the Piggies, he’s worth a dart. Jake Fromm was a game manager for the Bulldogs and whoever starts at QB this year will be much the same. I just think the price on Mathis is good for a starter on a good team in a plus matchup.
Bargain Shoppers:
Jeff Sims is one of the best bargains on the entire slate again. The only bright spot for Syracuse has been the defense, but Sims has stood tall against Florida State and Central Florida, both of which are much better than the Orange. He will be in all of my lineups on Saturday.
I’m not questioning the toughness of Spencer Sanders, but high ankle sprains are one of the few things that modern medicine still can’t cure. I doubt he plays. That makes Shane Illingworth an absolute steal this weekend. I’m sure he’ll have some growing pains, but should he start for the Cowboys, this price is WAY too low.
I will preface this by saying that there is no part of me that thinks Stanford transfer K.J. Costello is a good quarterback. However, a Mike Leach system, which depends on short passes in space to make it work, is a system that Costello could thrive in. LSU still has a ton of defensive talent, but this is a unit that isn’t used to playing together just yet. If you’re going to take a shot at them, this would be the time and the place. The fact that Leach is coaching only hammers this home.
I don’t think Skylar Thompson is all that good either, but he did have himself a game against Oklahoma last year. He also doesn’t make many mistakes. He’s a strong play at this low of a price.
