Game 1 of their best-of-three NL Wild Card series goes down on Wednesday, Sept. 30 at Truist Park in Atlanta, Georgia. The No. 2 Braves will trot out Max Fried against the NL ERA leader Trevor Bauer of the No. 7 Reds. While Atlanta has not advance in the postseason since 2001, the Reds haven’t done it since 1995. Something has to give in this best-of-three, first-round series, right?

Atlanta has won its third straight NL East division title. The Braves have won an MLB-best 20 division titles since 1969. However, they have only been to the World Series five times since moving to Atlanta and haven’t been there this century. Atlanta has failed to advance in its last 10 trips to the postseason. The Braves’ last postseason series victory came in the 2001 NLDS.
Cincinnati caught fire late in the season, thanks to great starting pitching. This is the Reds’ first postseason berth since losing in the NL Wild Card game to the division rival Pittsburgh Pirates. The last time the Reds won a postseason series, they defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 1995 NLDS before falling to the Braves in the NLCS. Believe it or not, someone is advancing here.

In a battle of aces between Bauer and Fried, it will come down to which team’s offense shows up at Truist Park this afternoon. Atlanta has been led by its powerful offense and strong bullpen this year. With this game being in the Braves’ home ballpark, they have a slight edge in this matchup. However, all the pressure in the world is on Atlanta to win this ball game and advance to the NLDS.
