Diana Freeman Lovecraft Country character profile

Diana Freeman: introduction and overview

Diana “Dee” Freeman is a talented and intuitive young girl who enjoys drawing sci-fi and fantasy comics. Diana used to help Hippolyta with the checklists they used to make sure George had everything he needed on his guide trip. After the passing of her father, George, Diana is left with Hippolyta, who now has vanished. Now, her best friend “Bobo” has been killed, and Diana tries to work through her emotions and feelings all while trying to escape the monsters that haunt her.

Relationships

Dee is the daughter of George and Hippolyta Freeman. She would always draw her dad comic strips to take with him on the road for his guide trips. George was a big supporter of Dee’s comic strips. She would have a strip for him to read about each town he traveled to and would talk with him about the meaning of each one. Dee even drew Hippolyta as one of her characters in her story. She loved her parents so much and still doesn’t understand George’s death.

Diana was close with her cousin Atticus as we saw in the first episode. Dee missed her time with him and helped her during George’s death. We saw when Leti had her housewarming party, her friends were playing with a ouija board. The ouija board spelled out George’s name, but we never came back to what the board meant. One of her friends, Bobo, (known as Emmett Till) was going on a trip. Bobo was later killed by two white men during his trip.

Motives

Diana is taking the death of Bobo (Emmett Till) pretty hard, and the adults in her life wonder how long they can go without breaking the news that they don’t think Hippolyta (Aunjanue Ellis) is coming back. After running away from a painful funeral, Diana has an altercation with Captain Landcaster, who places a curse on her. Since he placed the curse on her, she starts to see two demonic versions of Topsy from Uncle Tom’s Cabin that start to mess with her. In order to get these demons off her back, Dee decides to take matters into her own hands. Diana confronts Captain Landcaster in his office and demands to tell her what he wants in exchange for the curse. Dee wants these demons off her back but she knows Lancaster is not going to help her. Frustrated and growing increasingly fearful for her life.

Strengths and weaknesses

As Diana is waiting to fight Topsy and Bospy, we see her draw her experience with them into a comic strip. Even though she can’t speak about what’s happening to her with her family, she uses her drawing to express how she feels. Diana isn’t afraid to fight back after her run-in with Captain Landcaster putting a spell on her. During the spell, Lancaster put his spit on her and let it stay there knowing it wasn’t right. When Diana came back into his office later on in the episode, she spits right back at him and cursed him out. It showed a fearlessness in her that even though this was happening to her, she still had power and wasn’t afraid to use it. Diana is harassed by monsters representing the dehumanization of Black people. She is not only fighting these monsters but systemic racism, which she fears more than anything.

What’s next?

We see Diana seems to be making progress fighting back at Topsy and Bopsy. Montrose discovers her and holds her back, which allows them to attack by cutting up her wrists. Now, we have to see how all this connects to her cousin Atticus. Can Atticus save his cousin and lift the curse from her? We know George is dead and Hippolyta has vanished. Diana may have to go into foster care if her mom doesn’t show back up, unless Montrose or Atticus decides to take her in. Will Diana be the same after all of this over?
