Cam Newton returning for the Patriots could be the start of a great run.

Cam Newton tested positive for COVID-19 and has not played since Week 3 against the Las Vegas Raiders. Week 4 saw Brian Hoyer and Jarrett Stidham hold down the quarterbacking duties en route to a 26-10 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

The duo did not have to worry about playing this past week as the NFL decided to postpone the Patriots’ matchup against the Denver Broncos to this upcoming Sunday. That allowed the Patriots to regroup during an unexpected bye week and they may now have Newton back for the game.

Cam Newton returning at the perfect time

The Patriots are 2-2 and only one loss behind the 4-1 Buffalo Bills in the standings. They will enter Sunday’s matchup as favorites against the Broncos and have a game against the free-falling San Francisco 49ers in Week 7. The Buffalo Bills will host New England in Week 8 and it is possible that game is for the midseason AFC East lead.

Newton has looked solid when he has played and his stats are fascinating. He has thrown for no more than 162 yards in each of the team’s two wins. But in his loss, Newton threw for 397 yards and also rushed for two touchdowns against the Seattle Seahawks.

So while he has had conservative numbers in the victories, Newton has shown he is more than capable of putting up big stats if needed.

The Patriots were dealing with positive COVID-19 tests including one for Newton, but it appears everything has worked out well for the team. Buffalo got exposed by the Tennessee Titans and the Patriots are right back in the discussion of being the favorite to win that division.

The only challenge for Newton is a short week of preparation. Being at home and going up against a team that may be without Melvin Gordon should make the task more manageable, even with Drew Lock back for Denver.
