UFC Fight Island 6: Jessica Andrade defeated Katlyn Chookagian in her flyweight debut.
Jessica Andrade defeated Katlyn Chookagian via TKO (strikes), Round 1 – 4:55 at UFC Fight Island 6 on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2020, live from UFC Fight Island in Abu Dhabi.
It was a very good night for Andrade. The former strawweight champion became the first woman in the UFC to win fights in three different weight classes. With her victory over Chookagian, a former UFC flyweight title challenge, Andrade will likely become the next flyweight title challenge.
In the opening minutes of the first round, Andrade used her strength advantage to take down Chookagian early in the round. The two women battled on the feet, with Chookagian trying to take advantage of her notable reach advantage. Nearing the end of the round, the two women were tied up against the fence. Chookagian looked like she was in control but Andrade landed a devastating body shot, that replay showed was a liver shot.
Initially, it looked like Chookagian might have hurt herself as she spun out of the way, turning her back briefly to her opponent. Chookagian turned again and looked to fight on, as the fight moved to the opposite side of the cage. Noticing that her opponent was hurt, Andrade ran at her, attempting a flying knee that did not connect. As Andrade landed, she unleashed another shot to the body that landed to the liver again. Chookagian crumpled as Andrade looked to finish the fight. Referee Lukasz Bosacki, ran in and stopped the fight, seeing that Chookagian was not able to defend herself.
The win improved Andrade’s career record to 21-8 with 15 stoppages. With her victory over Chookagian, who was ranked first in the flyweight division, Andrade will likely become the top ranked flyweight and receive the next flyweight title shot. Current champion Valentina Shevchenko is scheduled to defender her title at UFC 255 against Jennifer Maia. Andrade will likely fight the winner at some point in 2021.
The loss is extremely disappointing for Chookagian, who drops to 14-4 and has lost two of her last three fights. Chookagian will look to rebound in his next fight against another highly ranked opponent in the flyweight division.
