Mac Jones is catching up on Trevor Lawrence in the 2020 Heisman Trophy race

If Trevor Lawrence doesn’t win the 2020 Heisman Trophy, maybe it will go to Mac Jones?

Though the Clemson Tigers quarterback remains the favorite to win the Heisman Trophy, the Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback has thrived in Steve Sarkisian‘s offense so much so that he has usurped Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback Justin Fields as the projected runner-up. The latest Heisman Trophy odds from William Hill have us wondering if Lawrence is a guarantee anymore.

Here are the 2020 Heisman Trophy odds entering Week 8 of the season.

  • Clemson Tigers quarterback Trevor Lawrence: -175
  • Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Mac Jones: +350
  • Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback Justin Fields: +750
  • Alabama Crimson Tide wide receiver Jaylen Waddle: +1400
  • Florida Gators quarterback Kyle Trask: +1800
  • Alabama Crimson Tide running back Najee Harris: +2200
  • SMU Mustangs quarterback Shane Buechele: +2500
  • Miami Hurricanes quarterback D’Eriq King: +3000
  • Clemson Tigers running back Travis Etienne: +3500

Lawrence, Jones and Fields are the only three Heisman candidates with +1000 odds or better at -175, +350 and +750, respectively. Alabama wide receiver Jaylen Waddle and Florida Gators quarterback Kyle Trask have better than +2000 odds at +1400 and +1800, respectively. At this time, those feel like the five likeliest players to be Heisman finalists, although this could change.

Alabama running back Najee Harris, SMU Mustangs quarterback Shane Buechele, Miami Hurricanes quarterback D’Eriq King and Clemson running back Travis Etienne are all at +3500 odds or better at +2200, +2500, +3000 and +3500, respectively. While Buechele and King are dark horses candidates for the Heisman, Harris and Etienne will battle it out for the Doak Walker.

Overall, it is hard to deny what Alabama has done offensively the last four weeks. Though Jones may be propped up by great talent around him in Harris and Waddle, as well as Sarkisian calling plays, he is the starting quarterback for Alabama and he’s really slinging it. Lawrence will still win it and Fields will leapfrog him in a bit, but Jones has at least forced himself into the conversation.

The more Alabama wins and looks prolific offensively, they better Jones’ Heisman bid will be.
