The Champions League group stage gets underway on Wednesday with Midtjylland hosting Atalanta at MCH Arena. Midtjylland are making their Champions League debut on Wednesday, while Atalanta are making their second consecutive appearance.

Midtjylland are one of the smallest clubs to ever play in the Champions League. The Wolves come from the Danish city of Herning, which only has a population of 50,332 people. Midtjylland have played in the Europa League in previous seasons, but their attempts to qualify for the Champions League had always come up short. This season, the Wolves defeated Slavia Prague in the qualifying round to earn their shot in Europe’s biggest tournament. Domestically, Midtjylland are off to a bit of a slow start in the Superligaen, picking up 11 points in five games as they try to capture their third title in the last four seasons.

Atalanta made their Champions League debut last season. The Goddess became the first club to lose their first three group stage games and advance. Atalanta nearly advanced to the semifinal but collapsed against Paris Saint-Germain, allowing two goals in the last five minutes. This season, the Goddess will try to improve on last year’s finish. Gian Piero Gasperini’s team are off to a good start in Serie A, sitting third after four games. Papu Gomez is off to a tremendous start to the season, scoring four goals and adding two assists. Gomez will lead the explosive Atalanta attack, along with Duvan Zapata and Josip Ilicic.
