According to the man himself, Cam Newton is having a down season.

The New England Patriots (2-3) are under .500 in their first five games for the first time since 2004. Following a loss to the Denver Broncos, there are concerns if the once-great dynasty can rebound in time for a postseason berth.

Everything problem starts with the quarterback. Cam Newton, who made his first start in over two weeks, struggled to find consistent against Denver’s defensive front. Ultimately, Newton believes that at the moment, his struggles are hurting the Patriots’ chances to win.

“I just haven’t been good,” Newton said according to Zack Cox on NESN.com “I haven’t matched enough good players together for my liking, and that’s what it comes down to.

“My standard is extremely high, and I haven’t been meeting it.”

Newton finished 17-of-25 for 157 yards, with two interceptions that both were deflected last week. He once again also led the team in rushing with 76 yards on 10 carries and a touchdown.

The Patriots have already missed a week after postponing their Week 5 matchup with the Broncos due to an outbreak of COVID-19. Earlier this season, Newton tested positive for the virus and was forced to miss a showdown against the now-5-1 Kansas City Chiefs. The limited practice has also kept the team away from the facility and off the practice field multiple times.

Is production a problem for Newton?

Newton, meanwhile, is looking to bounce back after two injured-plagued seasons. So far in four games, the 2015 MVP has impressed as a runner, tallying 225 yards on 45 attempts and scored five touchdowns. Through the air, however, Newton has thrown for 871 yards, two touchdowns, four interceptions and has a completion rating of 68.1 percent.

Fans around the league have revered Newton for his dual-threat mentality during his reign in the Queen City. In Foxborough, it’s just a threat thanks to the ground game. Although New England has a limited receiver corp and players still on the COVID-19 reserve list, Newton’s inability to connect with targets is forcing questions to be asked.

Can Newton answer them now or even before it’s too late?

“I’m in this position to win football games, and the last couple games, that hasn’t been the case,” Newton said Thursday.

New England could change that tune Sunday when former Patriots quarterback Jimmy Garropolo and the 3-3 San Francisco 49ers enter Gillette Stadium.
