The New York Mets and starting pitcher Marcus Stroman extended their marriage at least another year, with the veteran accepting his qualifying offer.

After years of being accused of cheap ownership — and rightfully so — it appears a new day has risen for the New York Mets.

On Wednesday, starting pitcher Marcus Stroman accepted his considerable qualifying offer of $18.9 million, keeping him with the team for another season. Stroman announced his excitement on Twitter, while also saying how happy he is that Steve Cohen has bought the franchise.

Last season, the 29-year-old did not pitch at all due to COVID-19, choosing to opt-out instead of report.

While Stroman is a great first step this offseason in building the Mets back into perennial contenders, the hometown star from Long Island isn’t enough. Team president Sandy Alderson needs to be aggressive this offseason, and his quest for a dominant, top-of-the-rotation arm to pair with Jacob deGrom should begin with Trevor Bauer.

In 2020, Bauer posted obscene numbers with the Cincinnati Reds. In 11 starts during the pandemic-shortened campaign, Bauer racked up a 5-4 record with a 1.73 ERA, 0.795 WHIP (league-best) and 100 strikeouts against 17 walks.

New York has the pillars of what could be a championship team in the near future, ranging from slugger Pete Alonso to the aforementioned perennial Cy Young contender in deGrom. With Stroman back and Noah Syndergaard slated to return sometime around midseason from his Tommy John surgery, the Mets have a chance to make a big move in the National League come 2021.
