New Mets owner Steve Cohen has an idea to honor Bobby Bonilla as he continues to collect money from the team.

Steve Cohen is the new owner of the New York Mets and excitement surrounding the franchise is real once again. The new billionaire owner is also active on Twitter and has been seen interacting with fans.

One fan brought up one of the weirdest things Cohen will have to deal with. That is the annual $1.19 million payment to Bobby Bonilla every July 1. The payments will be ongoing until 2035 and Cohen proposed a fun idea for the national holiday.

Cohen wants a true Bonilla-themed celebration

Who says no to this? Cohen wants to embrace the insanity and make it something to celebrate. Mets fans are already discussing Bonilla’s annual payday and this would be a way to just loosen up and have some fun with it.

The Bonilla payment is just one of many things that were ridiculous when it came to ownership under the Wilpon family. To clarify, the team turned what was nearly $6 million owed to Bonilla into almost $30 million. Everyone needs an agent like that.

Cohen has pledged to make changes and that involves spending like a contender. He likely has the money to pay Bonilla a lump sum, but there is no need to change the agreement if both sides are comfortable with everything.

Bonilla played with the Mets from 1992-1995 then made a return for the 1999 season. The fact he is still a topic of conversation in 2020 is a perfect example of why Mets fans wanted new ownership.

Fans are also hoping fun stuff like this idea from Cohen is countered by actual success on the field. Gimmicks without wins will just continue what has been a brutal cycle for fans.
