Alex Smith and the Washington Football Team just might win the NFC East this season.

At 3-7, Alex Smith and the Washington Football Team may actually win the NFC East.

If this is not the epitome of 2020 for how ridiculously strange it is, I cannot help you. We are talking about a team that improved to 3-7 on the season. They are being quarterbacked by a guy who could have lost his leg due to injury. Their head coach is in his first year and has battled cancer. And of course, this franchise is now known as the Washington Football Team.

How will Alex Smith and Washington end up winning the NFC East?

By defeating the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, Washington is in a three-way tie for the most wins by an NFC East team with three. Though they were swept by the New York Giants this season, Washington has played well in its last five games. Despite a 2-3 mark over that span, all three loses are by three points or fewer. They are not done winning games, but how many will they get?

In their remaining six games, only two are certain losses: At the Pittsburgh Steelers on Dec. 6 and vs. the Seattle Seahawks on Dec. 20. Then again, Seattle is far from a perfect team, so maybe Washington has a snowball’s chance at home vs. the Seahawks. As for the four other games, Washington has the potential to win any and all of them. What games really matter for them?

Well, Washington has to win its final two division games at the Dallas Cowboys next week and at the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 17. They probably need to win either the road date vs. the San Francisco 49ers on Dec. 13 or home vs. the Carolina Panthers on Dec. 27. 6-10 should never win an NFL division, but here we are with the 2020 NFC East. That record might be enough to do it.

With a veteran quarterback, a proven head coach and strong defense, Washington has a chance.
