The Raiders picked off Patrick Mahomes to deny points before halftime as they look to sweep the Chiefs in 2020.

What do you when you’re facing Patrick Mahomes in the red zone with the clock ticking down towards halftime and your lead is on the line?

If you’re the Las Vegas Raiders, you just pick him off.

During Sunday Night Football, cornerback Trayvon Mullen intercepted Mahomes to deny the Chiefs points just before the break, keeping the Raiders’ 17-14 lead intact.

It was the best possible outcome for the Raiders, preventing a game-tying field goal or a lead-taking touchdown.

The Raiders have done to Patrick Mahomes what no one has

That was Mahomes’ second interception all season. The first came against, you guessed it, the Raiders.

Leading into the turnover, Mahomes had 145 yards passing on 14-of-21 passing. He hit Tyreek Hill for a three-yard touchdown, but couldn’t manage to pull his team away from Las Vegas, who handed Kansas City their only loss of the campaign last time they met.

That was a 40-32 triumph at Arrowhead Stadium which saw Mahomes complete just 51.2 percent of his passes. His passer rating of 83.5 was his lowest of the season. Something about the Raiders just seems to unsettle the star quarterback this year.

The Chiefs have been the class of the AFC West but the Raiders have solidified themselves in second place in the division with three straight wins over the Browns, Chargers and Broncos. If they hold on against Kansas City, they would prove they can go toe-to-toe with anyone in the league.

Mahomes, of course, is tasked with slowing down that train. Since losing to the Raiders, the Chiefs have dispatched the Bills, Broncos, Jets and Panthers. Las Vegas is also their biggest test in a while.
