Eagles: Lane Johnson officially ruled out for 2020 after gruesome ankle injury

Lane Johnson will not play again in 2020 for the Eagles.

Everything that could’ve gone wrong for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2020 has gone wrong, as star players are regressing to career-worst levels while what few players are performing up to par has been saddled with injuries, right tackle Lane Johnson chief among them. Eagles fans knew about Johnson’s injury struggles, but his description of his most recent ankle injury might get Eagles fans wondering if he’ll return to full health in time for 2021.

On a Zoom call with reporters, Johnson, who has missed three games this year and left a few others early with injuries, claims that his 2020 season is officially over, as he claims the inside of his ankle “exploded” in an ominous statement.

Johnson and Andre Dillard were supposed to be the bookend tackles for Carson Wentz this season. However, a Dillard injury before the season and Johnson’s own ailments have forced backups like Jordan Mailata and Jack Driscoll into action.

Even though Johnson, a former first-round pick out of Oklahoma, has tried to play through injuries and has clearly been less effective than he has been in past seasons, he has been better than Mailata and rookie Jack Driscoll, who will likely remain the starter at right tackle.

One of the main reasons Wentz’s play has been so bad fans want to see Jalen Hurts is that his offensive line has gone down the tubes, with Johnson’s injury serving as the nail in the coffin. There are hopes for Philly to put it all together in 2021, but they all hinge on Johnson shrugging off his ankle injury and returning to the form that helped the Eagles win a Super Bowl.
