Jeffrey Lurie is going to make someone pay for Eagles failure, but it’s not who you think
Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie has some tough decisions to make this offseason.
Still being alive for the NFC East crown does not hide the fact the Philadelphia Eagles are an absolute mess in 2020. Fans around the country got to see that Monday night and fans in Philly may be wondering what changes will come this offseason.
Some are calling for Doug Pederson to be fired. Others want Carson Wentz benched immediately, as his contract makes it impossible to simply cut him loose.
FanSided’s NFL Insider Matt Lombardo has revealed it is likely GM Howie Roseman who gets the axe this offseason.
Eagles need a change up top
Lombardo spoke to a former GM who believes Roseman is the one person in most danger of losing their job.
“If anyone goes, it’s most likely Howie Roseman,” a former general manager tells FanSided. “The issue here is Jeffrey Lurie knows that if he fires Doug Pederson, he gets hired immediately. Maybe the next day. Jeffrey’s lived that before [with Andy Reid’s hiring by the Chiefs].”
Firing Pederson still shouldn’t be out of the question. However, Lombardo does point out how the lack of talent for Pederson to deploy is due to Roseman’s drafting. Drafting Jalen Hurts appears to be something the head coach didn’t want and the lack of receivers around Wentz is concerning.
It is easy to look at players drafted around someone like Jalen Reagor and play the hindsight game. But there is so much more to this situation including the fact the Eagles are currently staring down the reality of being $64 million over the cap this offseason. How does that happen?
Pederson coached his team to a Super Bowl victory in 2017 and if he is fired another team will surely pick him up hoping a change of scenery and better talent will do him well. That may cause Lurie to move on from Roseman and hope a change in the talent evaluation business proves Pederson is in fact still a solid coach.
