Cam Newton isn’t having the best season throwing the ball, but one can hardly fault him when given the lack of quality weapons around him. With New England’s pair of rookie third-round tight ends in Devin Asiasi and Dalton Keene barely getting on the field, Newton has been stuck throwing to the likes of Damiere Byrd and Jakobi Meyers. While N’Keal Harry was picked with the intention of becoming a No.1 wideout for the future, he looks more like a bust than a future star. Bill Belichick, for all his success, hasn’t been good at drafting wide receivers. However, his buddy Saban could give him quite the prize in Smith.

Separation is the name of the game, and being fast or physical doesn’t automatically guarantee you can create space. Harry is a talented wideout, but he can’t escape man coverage at the line of scrimmage. Not only would Smith be able to do that and make havoc with the ball in his hands, but he could give this offense a downfield vertical aspect that Josh McDaniels simply hasn’t been able to conjure up over the course of this season. Whoever is under center in 2021 in New England would have a bona fide No. 1 target in Smith.
