The Mets are reportedly favorites to land star outfielder George Springer this offseason.

The New York Mets are operating with a whole new philosophy now that Steve Cohen is running the franchise. George Springer being a likely target in free agency would not have been a reality if the Wilpons were still in charge.

But things are different in Queens and ESPN’s Buster Olney seems convinced the team is going to sign Springer. He even went as far to put up some collateral in the process.

Olney confident Springer is heading to New York

It appears the Mets will become a team without a real budget, as least for the first few years of Cohen’s ownership. Springer is atop this year’s free agent class and landing him would signal a chance for a Mets franchise that has dealt with too much dysfunction as of late.

Olney went on to say the Mets may not be stopping with just one elite free agent this offseason.

Signing both Springer and Trevor Bauer would be quite the story of the MLB offseason. The team has also been linked in trade rumors for Francisco Lindor. Even simply making efforts to acquire top talent should have fans excited.

Springer grew up in Connecticut and went to college there as well. The sales pitch gets easier with that and Cohen may be willing to one-up every single offer the outfielder receives. Olney seems to be confident and given his knowledge, that is good news for Mets fans.

The past few years of Mets baseball have been marred by bad contracts and failed expectations. Spending on reliable players like Springer, and potentially Bauer, should begin the shift toward the Mets actually being a contender. Fans are now hoping Olney’s confidence is warranted.
