SEC Preseason Player of the Year Keyontae Johnson received medical attention immediately.

As Florida basketball was taking on in-state rival Florida State, Keyontae Johnson collapsed and was taken off on a stretcher. He was taken to the hospital, and is listed in critical but stable condition.

The game was momentarily paused but eventually continued despite the shock of the players. This is, hopefully, a good sign as to Johnson’s condition. Johnson is averaging nearly 20 points per game on the season for a Florida Gators team that’s expected to make some serious noise in the SEC.

This Sunshine State rivalry took a turn for the worst

The Gators and Seminoles are both have NCAA Tournament expectations this season, as the Noles and Leonard Hamilton have become an ACC force year in and year out. Just last year, they won the conference.

Florida, meanwhile, has their deepest team in quite some time. Hamilton even took notice in preparing for his in-state rival.

“They are a lot deeper than they have been,” Florida State head coach Leonard Hamilton said this week of the Gators. “Appears that they are playing 10 and 12 guys because of how aggressive they are playing and the energy that they are playing with, that they are utilizing a full complement of all their players.”

Johnson, of course, is the centerpiece of the Gators’ offense and has real NBA prospects. We can only hope this doesn’t serve as a significant setback to those expectations.
