Kansas City Chiefs rookie phenom Clyde Edwards-Helaire had to be carried off the field after a brutal leg injury against the Saints.

The Kansas City Chiefs suffered their biggest loss of the season on Sunday, but it had nothing to do with the final score.

In the fourth quarter of the Chiefs game against the Saints, rookie running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire was rolled up and bent backwards, and suffered what appears to be a serious leg injury.

Edwards-Helaire needed help getting to the locker room but couldn’t put any weight on his leg.

This is the last thing the Chiefs wanted to see. Not only is this a tough break for a rookie who was having a phenomenal first season, but it takes a key cog of a carefully constructed offensive machine out of things.

Kansas City brought in Le’Veon Bell earlier this season to compliment an already loaded offense, but now it appears the signing will pay off in ways no one wanted it to. Bell is equipped to step into the starting role, as he was the bell cow for the Pittsburgh Steelers and looked to be that guy for the Jets before he realized who he was putting his body on the line for.

Bell stepping up to fill Edwards-Helaire’s shoes is not what the Chiefs thought they’d be getting out of him when they signed him, but it’s unfortunately what might have to happen. The extent of Edwards-Helaire’s injury isn’t known but the images of him being carried off to the locker room are not encouraging.

Kansas City has its sights set on repeating as Super Bowl winners and Edwards-Helaire was figuring to be a huge part of that. The Chiefs are the best team in the league until proven otherwise but losing their star running back is a test we didn’t expect the team was going to have to face.
