The Los Angeles Chargers decided to part ways with head coach Anthony Lynn after a 7-9 finish in his fourth campaign with the team.

You had to expect it, even if it was uncertain. The Los Angeles Chargers fired Anthony Lynn on Monday morning, despite finishing out a tough year with a four-game winning streak. Lynn, who had four years with the club, reached the playoffs once.

In 2018, the Chargers were the AFC’s top wild card team at 12-4 and beat the Baltimore Ravens in the Wild Card round before being blown out the following Saturday by the New England Patriots.

All told, Lynn went 33-31 with the Chargers, albeit with 5-11 and 7-9 marks to finish out his tenure. Looking forward, general manager Tom Telesco will have ample candidates excited about interviewing for the position, especially considering the play from rookie quarterback Justin Herbert.

In 15 starts, Herbert set the rookie record for touchdown passes with 31 while throwing for 4,336 yards and sporting a 66.6 completion percentage. Look for multiple big-name offense coordinators to be considered including Eric Bieniemy of the Kansas City Chiefs, and Brian Daboll of the Buffalo Bills.

As pointed out by Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, Daboll and Telesco attended the same high school, perhaps giving him the inside track for his first head-coaching gig. Daboll has done wonders with Josh Allen in Buffalo, turning the youngster from a middling quarterback to an MVP candidate in 2020 with 4,544 passing yards and 37 touchdowns against 10 interceptions.

Los Angeles can begin the search for a new quarterback immediately via remote interviews, per the NFL’s guidelines as we continue to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Chargers are one of six head-coaching openings right now, alongside the Jacksonville Jaguars, Atlanta Falcons, Detroit Lions, New York Jets and Houston Texans.
