Eagles: Troy Aikman reveals Doug Pederson’s plans at QB before firing

Troy Aikman revealed what Doug Pederson wanted to do at quarterback if he had not been fired by the Eagles.

Doug Pederson’s job was reportedly safe heading into the final game of the season. Then he appeared to pull off a tank job during the fourth quarter against Washington and the Philadelphia Eagles are seeking a new coach in 2021.

Pederson was fired this week and his plans at quarterback may have been the final straw. Troy Aikman recently appeared on Michael Irvin’s podcast and revealed what Pederson ultimately wanted to do at quarterback in 2021.

Pederson’s plans clashed with ownership

Aikman explained how Pederson preferred to start Jalen Hurts, while ownership wants to stick with Carson Wentz because of his giant contract that is going to be next to impossible to move.

This revelation may have some Eagles fans questioning why Nate Sudfeld played in the fourth quarter of Week 17 if Hurts was Pederson’s guy all along. If the coach truly wasn’t trying to lose, he may have gotten himself fired regardless.

It makes sense that ownership wants Wentz to start. His four-year, $128 million extension features a dead cap value of nearly $60 million in 2021. If he is going to be making a fortune and can’t be traded or cut, he may as well be on the field.

Ownership now has to find a new head coach who will agree to keep Wentz in as the starter. This also creates a weird situation for Hurts, who may be wondering why the Eagles have him at all if a coach was fired in part for wanting to play him.

The Eagles have a huge problem on their hands if Wentz continues to regress in 2021. Pederson can claim he was right all along, but the money is making the decisions in Philly.
