Alabama football zeroing in on Doug Marrone as new OL coach

Doug Marrone could be the next coach to join the Nick Saban’s Alabama football staff.

After spending several years in the NFL with the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Buffalo Bills before that, noted offensive line guru Doug Marrone could be heading back to the college level.

Marrone is a serious candidate to be the next offensive line coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide. Alabama football fans should be ecstatic if the former Jaguars, Bills and Syracuse Orange head coach is the one to replace Kyle Flood in Tuscaloosa. It may seem like a move backwards for Marrone, but it is one that could set him up to lead another Power 5 program one day soon.

Alabama will not skip a beat with Doug Marrone on its coaching staff

Marrone famously opted out of his head-coaching contract with the Bills after the 2014 NFL season. This was due to an ownership change within the organization. He left to be the Jaguars offensive line coach in 2015. Two years later, he was one game away from leading Jacksonville to its first-ever trip to the Super Bowl. Three years later, the Jaguars went 1-15 and he was fired.

This would not be the first time Marrone has coached in the southeastern footprint. Marrone has coached position groups with the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, the Georgia Bulldogs and the Tennessee Volunteers before. He was also the New Orleans Saints’ offensive coordinator prior to getting the Syracuse job in 2009. Marrone would bring a great deal of experience to Alabama.

If Marrone is the next Alabama offensive line coach, he will benefit working alongside Nick Saban.
