Duke will look to avoid falling below .500 with a win against Georgia Tech.

The last week of January is here and Duke is in big-time crisis mode. The Blue Devils are just 5-5 on the season and 3-3 in ACC play without a quality win on their resume, leaving Mike Krzyzewski’s team in serious jeopardy of missing the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1995.

Krzyzewski is clearly getting frustrated, snapping at a student reporter following Duke’s loss to Louisville on Saturday, the team’s third straight. The return of Jalen Johnson from injury hasn’t done much to help the Blue Devils’ fortunes since this team has had trouble gelling from the start of the season.

Duke’s issues lie primarily on the defensive end, where the Blue Devils give up 72.3 points per game. Getting big-time stops down the stretch has been a problem all season long, a flaw that has been exposed whenever Krzyzewski’s team faces a quality opponent.

The Blue Devils are back at home for this game against a tricky Georgia Tech team that is looking to get back to March Madness for the first time since 2010. The Yellow Jackets have played very well of late, blowing out no. 20 Clemson by 18 points last week before losing by a bucket at Virginia on Saturday.

There is no question that Georgia Tech has played like a more complete team than Duke thus far despite having less overall talent on their roster. This game is of vital importance to the Blue Devils, who can’t keep blowing winnable games against teams that they figure to be directly competing with for at-large bids in March.
