Camar Wheaton makes it official, as he signs with the Alabama football team on Wednesday.

Though there was a chance five-star running back Camar Wheaton could have committed to Lincoln Riley’s Oklahoma football program on National Signing Day, but he held steady and signed with the Alabama football team.

Wheaton initially committed to Alabama in December. He was the last member of Alabama’s 2021 recruiting class to sign his National Letter of Intent. A lot of this has to do with his two primary recruiters leaving for other jobs in January. Charles Huff is the Marshall head coach, while Jeff Banks is Texas’ special teams coordinator. Wheaton just needed a bit more time.

Was there any doubt on Camar Wheaton ever flipping to Oklahoma?

There may have been a minute there where it could have happened, but that all seemed to fall to the wayside once former Tennessee Volunteers running back Eric Gray announced he was transferring to Oklahoma. It would have limited Wheaton’s opportunity to get meaningful snaps right away in Norman. By sticking with Alabama, Wheaton can be the Tide’s next superstar back.

Throughout the Saban era in Tuscaloosa, it has been plug-and-play from the running back stable. The amount of stud backs at Alabama have gone on to have fantastic NFL careers, most notably former Heisman Trophy winners Mark Ingram Jr. and Derrick Henry. They have left a fantastic legacy that makes other elite backs throughout the United States like Wheaton want to go there.

By maintaining Wheaton’s five-star commitment, Alabama’s class remains one of the very best.
