Mark Cuban’s will defend his team to the last and he has sharp words ready for anyone taking shots at his star player Luka Doncic.

It’s been a disappointing start for the Dallas Mavericks. They entered the season with hopes of making a run as a dark-horse contender but nearly a third of the way through the season they have the second-worst record in the Western Conference. Every player on the roster has had moments of apathy and ineffectiveness and the frustration is starting to show.

As Zach Lowe pointed out on his podcast this week (per The Big Lead), that frustration is manifesting in a lot of talking to the officials from Luka Doncic:

“Luka has become one of the biggest whiners in the NBA. It’s constant, every time he drives he is whining. He spent so much energy whining to the referees and slumping his shoulders to teammates, it sucked the life of the team many times.”

Mavericks owner, Mark Cuban, has a long history of fiercely defending his team against criticism from opponents, referees and the media. It didn’t take long for him to stand up Luka.

What did Mark Cuban say in response to Zach Lowe?

Cuban recently appeared on VICE TV’s Cari & Jemele Won’t Stick to Sports and had some NSFW words for Lowe.

Cuban’s passion is admirable and it’s hard to tell the context from text in a PR release. Maybe he delivered the line with a smile on his face. Cuban and Lowe are certainly well acquainted, often appearing in related panels at MIT’s Sloan Sports Analytics Conference. But regardless of the tone and intent, Lowe has a point. Talking with the officials certainly isn’t helping Doncic get any extra calls and his efforts might be better served getting back in transition defense.
