The Denver Broncos are losing faith in Drew Lock, if they haven’t lost it already, and these three quarterbacks stand as possible available upgrades.

Since Peyton Manning retired following a win in Super Bowl 50, the Denver Broncos have missed on quarterback after quarterback. John Elway’s latest stab at it came in the second round of the 2019 draft. Drew Lock showed promise as a rookie, going 4-1 as the starter (I know, I know, quarterback wins are a fickle stat).

Lock’s second season was interrupted by a Week 2 shoulder injury, and he was up and down over the course of his 13 starts. The Broncos made an offer for Matthew Stafford and they seem to be in the Deshaun Watson conversation, so it appears new GM George Paton indeed has the full ability to make a move for another quarterback if it fits.

Then came a report from Pro Football Network’s Tony Pauline. Apparently the Broncos slimmed down, or “dummied down” their playbook for Lock late this past season. There was some improvement over his final six games, but it’s not as if Lock became the second coming of Manning during his best years with the Broncos.

The Broncos are clearly looking for a way to replace Lock, and here are three options they could get to get it done.

Three available quarterback upgrades for the Broncos

3. Andy Dalton

Dak Prescott’s injury opened the door for Dalton in 2020, and he performed well enough (2,170 yards, 14 touchdowns, eight interceptions, 64.9 percent completion rate) to find another starting opportunity this offseason. He had a stretch of four straight games (and five of six) with multiple passing touchdowns, as the Cowboys remained in contention to win the NFC East in Week 17.

Dalton is a perfectly capable quarterback. The Broncos have a set of weapons he merely has to keep on the rails by making accurate throws routinely and not throwing interceptions in bunches. So in that respect he’d be an upgrade over Lock, and he could be signed to compete for the starting job.
