Chiefs free agency rumors, Patrick Peterson

Bashaud Breeland is headed for unrestricted free agency which could leave the Chiefs with a significant hole at cornerback. Peterson is one of the biggest names that projects to be available on the open market, but he’s not the right fit for Kansas City.

Peterson no longer possesses the sort of world-class speed that made him a genuine All-Pro during his prime in Arizona. He’s still got above-average wheels, but he requires significantly more safety help than he used to. That problem will only grow more significant for Peterson as he enters his age-31 season.

He probably has a few good years left, but the Chiefs should be looking for a more long-term solution at corner. Again, this is a void Kansas City attempt to fill via the draft instead of free agency.

If Peterson is willing to sign a bargain one-year deal to ring chase with the Chiefs then they should pursue him with vigor. That’s not a realistic expectation though. He’ll be looking for over $10 million per season on a multi-year contract. That kind of deal is outside Kansas City’s price range and also wouldn’t represent good value for next year’s Super Bowl favorites.
