2. Chicago Bears

There’s a hint of logic out there that says if one team should go all-in and mortgage its entire future to get Deshaun Watson, that team should be the Bears. General manager Ryan Pace and head coach Matt Nagy narrowly avoided being fired in tandem (thank you Week 15 victory over the Vikings which effectively secured a playoff spot). With Mitch Trubisky hitting free agency, they’re getting a shot to get the quarterback position right and save their jobs.

It’s not nearly as bad for them as it is for the Steelers, but the Bears are a little bit over the salary cap right now. Some inevitable cuts will get them into the black, and finding a way to unload Nick Foles in a trade might be nice too.

If the Bears can somehow re-sign Allen Robinson, or replace him as their No. 1 wide receiver with a reasonable facsimile, they still have some interesting weapons (David Montgomery, Tarik Cohen, Cole Kmet, Anthony Miller). Fortifying the offensive line a bit would be helpful to a new quarterback too.

The Bears absolutely should consider making the Texans an offer they shouldn’t (and won’t) refuse for Watson. But if that pursuit falls short, an available Roethlisberger might become a fallback.
