Chris Jones lost in Super Bowl 55, and he plans on never having that happen ever again.

The Kansas City Chiefs were not expected to be trounced at the hands of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl 55. But that is exactly what happened, as they lost 31-9 and their chances of repeating as champions dissipated.

Star defensive tackle Chris Jones now has a Super Bowl win and a loss added to his resume. During an interview with Sports Radio 810 in Kansas City, Jones said he has absolutely no desire to experience the latter ever again.

“I keep telling myself I won’t lose in the Super Bowl again, but I’m just [working] and I’m going to put myself in a position to give this team the best of me,” said Jones, via Pro Football Talk. “That’s all you can do. You really can’t hang on a loss because we’ve got to focus on this season. It happens, unfortunately. So unfortunately, there’s a winner and there’s a loser and we’re always playing to win, but sometimes things don’t go according to the plan. But we’ve still got another opportunity to come back, especially with this team that we have. So let’s focus on this year, getting better, getting the best we can be as a person and bringing it through OTAs and training camp.”

Chiefs imploded in the big game

On paper, the Chiefs looked to be in good shape to become the first team to run it back since the New England Patriots did so in the early 2000’s. However, things became much more difficult after starting left tackle Eric Fisher tore his Achilles tendon in the AFC Championship Game, leaving quarterback Patrick Mahomes with two backup tackles starting the big game.

While Mahomes being pressured 29 times by Tampa Bay’s vicious pass defense played a huge role in Kansas City’s loss, the Chiefs defense played no better. They surrendered 31 points and 340 yards on 11 drives. It certainly did not help matters that the defense played a role in the Chiefs trailing 21-6 at halftime due to costly penalties.

In the loss, Jones tallied five total tackles (three solo, two assists) against the Buccaneers.

The Chiefs are set to lose 16 players to unrestricted free agency and only have a limited amount of cap space available to them. However, they could fill out roster needs through the NFL Draft and some savvy, low-cost free agency signings.

Kansas City will still enter the 2021 season as favorites to represent the AFC in Super Bowl 56, and you can expect Jones to use this loss to the Buccaneers as motivation.
