Alex Smith’s future with the Washington Football Team seems to have been decided
The Washington Football Team is expected to part ways with quarterback Alex Smith in the coming days says NFL Network’s Ian Rappoport.
Alex Smith’s NFL journey has been one of the most remarkable ones fans have ever seen. Just months after he had over 10 surgeries to correct his gruesome, life-threatening leg injury, Smith took the field again for the Washinton Football Team to continue to pursue his passion as an NFL quarterback.
He stepped in during Week 5 after Kyle Allen faced an injury but wouldn’t be named the starter for the team until another Allen injury in Week 10. Smith took over and eventually led them to the playoffs. But, his magic ran out there, and he was inactive for Washington’s wild-card loss to the eventual champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Smith proved a lot of doubters wrong about his abilities last season, but at 36 years old, his time in the league is surely dwindling. As the 2021 season approaches, Washington is taking a long hard look at their relationship with the veteran.
The Washington Football Team is expected to part ways with Alex Smith
Although Smith has made it known that he does want to continue to play, it may not be with the Washington Football Team in the future. NFL Network’s Ian Rappoport is reporting that the team is planning to part ways with the 14-year veteran.
With Taylor Heinicke stepping in for Washington in Smith’s absence, this probably shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. Smith threw more interceptions than touchdowns and Heinicke was clearly the younger, more mobile option.
Washington will look to test the market for another quarterback while Smith will become a free agent for the first time in his career.
Smith’s career doesn’t have to end here by any stretch of the imagination with several NFL teams in need of someone under center. Where could the veteran end up?
