Packers GM already lowering expectations for team in free agency
Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst is sure making it seem like the team will not be aggressive during free agency this year.
The 2020 campaign ended in heartbreaking fashion for the Green Bay Packers. Holding the No. 1 seed out of the NFC, the expectation was Aaron Rodgers would be able to lead the team back to the Super Bowl. Unfortunately, Tom Brady and the Bucs got in the way, upsetting them in the conference title showdown.
Now, fans are hoping general manager Brian Gutekunst and the front office can make some moves in free agency to try and send the team over the top. Well, it doesn’t look like that’s going to be happening.
Brian Gutekunst’s latest quote on the team’s free agency plans won’t please Packers fans
Unfortunately for the Packers, they’re currently over the salary cap for 2021 and will need to figure some things out for guys already on the roster. That will certainly make things tough for the team to sign big-name guys who are looking for new homes.
“I do think if the right particular player is out there, and we think it’s the best thing for the Green Bay Packers, we’ll be able to do it,” Gutekunst said via Packers Wire. “We won’t be able to do a lot, and I do think there are some restrictions, but if the right guy is there, I think we’d be able to do what we need to do.”
The Packers may just wait until the NFL Draft to find some help for the team. If that’s the case, Green Bay supporters will be begging Gutekunst to bring in another wide receiver for Aaron Rodgers.
Last year, Green Bay used its first-round pick on quarterback Jordan Love and countless folks in Wisconsin remain furious with the decision. If the team is serious about helping Rodgers win another Super Bowl before he leaves town, they’ve got to be smart come draft time and throughout the offseason.
