3 surprise cuts the Football Team could make this offseason

The defending NFC East champions have some major questions to answer.

What to make of Ron Rivera’s club? It was quite the 2020 season for the Washington Football Team as they won the NFC East with a 7-9 record. The head coach overcame cancer and inspirational quarterback Alex Smith captured NFL Comeback Player of the Year honors.

The team fought hard with backup quarterback Taylor Heinicke in a 31-23 loss to the eventual Super Bowl champion Buccaneers in the wild card round. And the club re-signed him this offseason. Meanwhile, it appears that the team is ready to move on from Smith.

So what other moves could the team make it terms of trimming the roster? Washington currently has 66 players under contract (via Spotrac). Could these three performers be looking for work elsewhere?

3. ILB Jon Bostic

He has bounced around the league since the Chicago Bears in 2013. The former University of Florida standout has played for five different teams in seven NFL campaigns. He’s spent the past two seasons with the Washington Football Team and in 2020, linebacker Jon Bostic led the club with 118 tackles and added three sacks and an interception. He was second on the Football Team with 105 stops in ’19.

But while the well-traveled performer has amassed his share of tackles, he has also struggled to be a run-stopper and that’s where Washington’s improving defense must improve. Bostic earns poor grades when it comes to rushing defense via Pro Football Focus (subscription required). The team could look to upgrade this area in the draft or elsewhere.
