Former Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Steven Nelson took to Twitter to say goodbye to fans after he was granted his release from the team.

Tuesday was quite the rollercoaster ride for Steven Nelson and the Pittsburgh Steelers. First, the cornerback took to Twitter asking the team for his release, claiming he didn’t want to be held hostage. That of course angered fans.

Well, Pittsburgh ended up giving him his wish and cut him about an hour later. Now, Nelson has taken to Twitter to say goodbye to Steelers fans and thank the organization for everything. Yup, this just seems kind of odd.

Steven Nelson said goodbye to the Steelers after asking to be released earlier in the day

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Nelson was allowed to try and find a trade partner starting last week. That alone told you that the marriage between the two sides was already on ice. Fast forward to Tuesday and Nelson made it more than clear he wanted out when he claimed he was being held hostage by the organization.

Now that he’s gone, Nelson’s release has saved the Steelers $8.25 million in cap space. For the cornerback, he’ll now look to continue his NFL career elsewhere this fall. This past season, Nelson started 15 games for Pittsburgh and recorded two interceptions.

It was his second year at Heinz Field, as he spent the first four campaigns of his career with the Kansas City Chiefs. The 5-foot-11, 195-pounder has seven interceptions in six NFL seasons, adding 291 tackles and 52 pass deflections.

You can expect multiple teams to reach out to try and land his services. While we don’t know where he’ll play next, we do know he won’t be donning a Steelers uniform again and the Pittsburgh supporters seem to be more than okay with that.
