Seven months after being knocked out, Dillian Whyte got his revenge against Alexander Povetkin, stopping him in round 4 of their heavyweight bout.

In August of 2020, Alexander Povetkin defied the odds knocking out Dillian Whyte, who’s 10 years younger.

Unfortunately for Povetkin, he didn’t have that same luck during their rematch on Saturday, March 27.

Whyte (28-2, 19 KOs) exacted revenge against Povetkin, stopping him in round 4 of their heavyweight boxing bout from the Europa Point Sports Complex in Gibraltar.

In their first match, Povetkin was knocked down twice in round 4 but rallied in round 5 to knock out Whyte with a thunderous uppercut. In the rematch, the 42-year-old Povetkin again found himself in trouble in round 4 but couldn’t recover this time around.

Before his loss to Povetkin, Whyte was the interim WBC heavyweight champion and was in line for a mandatory title shot against Tyson Fury. Povetkin spoiled Whyte’s chances of a title shot, but Whyte came back better than ever in their second contest.

Povetkin (36-3-1, 25 KOs) has been a professional boxer for 16 years. He won the Olympic gold medal in 2004 and went on to win the WBA heavyweight title in 2011. Povetkin had only two losses on his record to Wladimir Klitschko and Anthony Joshua before his latest defeat to Whyte.

Dillian Whyte defeated Alexander Povetkin the second time around via TKO in round 4.

Round 1 of their rematch was action-packed. Whyte wobbled Povetkin early with an awkward right to the head and had him backpedaling for most of the round. Whyte connected with several more right hands throughout the round.

Povetkin woke up a bit in round 2 but ate more of Whyte’s right hand in round 3. Povetkin never got into a rhythm and looked off-balance for most of the fight.

In round 4, Whyte hurt Povetkin with another right to the head with 34 seconds remaining. He landed another right seconds later and followed with a looping left hook that dropped Povetkin. Povetkin got to his feet but stumbled while trying to get up. His legs were gone and the referee stopped the fight, giving Whyte the round 4 TKO victory.

Povetkin looked out of sorts for much of the fight, which had to be rescheduled twice after Povetkin tested positive for COVID-19. Reports stated that he was hospitalized twice with the virus. Before their rematch, Povetkin insisted to FanSided that he felt like a 25-year-old and had no lasting effects from the virus.

Whyte is again the WBC interim heavyweight champion. The current WBC champion is Tyson Fury, who is reported to be locked up for two fights with Anthony Joshua to fully unify the title. Whyte will have to wait a while before he has a chance to challenge for a piece of the heavyweight crown.
