Women’s March Madness: South Carolina returns to Elite Eight with win over Georgia Tech

The South Carolina women’s basketball program returns to the Elite Eight after taking down the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.

The 1-seed South Carolina Gamecocks women’s basketball team took down the 5-seed Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 76-65 on Sunday in San Antonio to advance to the Elite Eight.

This marks the third time in four years that Dawn Staley’s has made it to this point of the women’s basketball tournament.

Laeticia Amihere had 15 points and seven rebounds off the bench to lead South Carolina to victory. Victaria Saxton and Zia Cooke also pitched in for the Gamecocks to get the 11-point victory. Saxton had 12 points and six rebounds while Cooke went wild from three-point range, hitting 5-of-6 effort from beyond the arc. Cooke finished with17 points and two of those 3’s came in the fourth quarter, helping the Gamecocks to maintain their lead.

South Carolina basketball looks like a threat to cut down the nets

Sophomore sensation Aliyah Boston had the first seven points in the third after going scoreless in the first half. The All-American finished with nine points and was surely happy to have her teammates pick her up after the off day.

Lotta-Maj Lahtinen had a game-high 20 points and added five assists in the loss for Georgia Tech. Down the stretch, the Yellow Jackets began to mount a comeback but never got within six points in the fourth quarter. Georgia Tech star Lorela Cubaj had 15 points and seven boards in the loss while Kierra Fletcher ended her season with a 16 points and seven rebounds stat line.

The Gamecocks await the winner of Maryland and Texas in the Hemisfair Region final Tuesday night from San Antonio.
