Jimmy Garoppolo is saying he is ready for a quarterback competition with the 49ers in 2021.

The San Francisco 49ers traded up to the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft and it seems obvious they are taking a quarterback. So what does that mean for Jimmy Garoppolo?

The 49ers, so far, are saying Garoppolo isn’t going anywhere. That still seems hard to believe given the salary he has on the books and the fact he could be getting $25 million to sit on the bench. There are certainly teams out there who would love to add him as a starter.

Garoppolo, like his team, is sticking with the narrative that he isn’t going anywhere. The latest report says the quarterback actually welcomes the competition in 2021. So he says.

Jimmy Garoppolo claims he is ready for a competition

Garoppolo really has not much else to say. The alternative would be demanding a trade. However, that would be a bad look if he thinks he can’t beat out a rookie quarterback.

His tenure in San Francisco has been an interesting one. He was traded to the 49ers in October 2017 and signed a massive five-year, $137 million extension the following offseason. His 2018 season was cut short by a torn ACL, but then he bounced back and nearly won the Super Bowl in 2019.

2020 was another injury-plagued season and that has the 49ers looking at the top available quarterbacks in the draft. One missed pass late in the Super Bowl may have already sealed the decision in the minds of Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch.
