Mets discussed contract extension with Jacob deGrom in spring training

Leading up to the 2021 MLB campaign, the New York Mets reportedly held extension talks with ace hurler Jacob deGrom. 

What an incredibly busy offseason it was the for New York Mets. With Steve Cohen taking over as owner, the team went out and traded for Francisco Lindor plus much more. Well, did the team nearly get a contract extension done with superstar hurler Jacob deGrom?

According to SNY’s Andy Martino, the two sides held talks before Opening Day arrived, but were unable to reach an agreement. On top of that, Martino has come out and said the deGrom and New York aren’t expected to continue those discussions during the regular season. Per spotrac, deGrom has a player option following the 2022 season.

With the Mets and deGrom striking out on extension talks, you better believe it will be a top priority for the front office to get things done with him as soon as possible. In recent years, deGrom has solidified himself as one of the best pitchers in the game.

He won the NL Cy Young Award in 2018 and followed things up by doing so again in 2019. Last season during the shortened 60-game campaign, the hard-throwing righty went 4-2 with a 2.38 ERA in 12 starts. For his career, deGrom is 70-51 and has been to the All-Star Game three times.

He’s now in his eighth campaign in Queens, hoping he can help the Mets not only be competitive in the NL East, but also help the club get back to the postseason. There are some monster expectations for the team this year and the same is the case for deGrom. While his first start of the season got postponed due to the Nats-Mets COVID issues, Mets fans can’t wait for deGrom to take the bump next.
